SMALL, RURAL LIBRARIES MAY BE HIT HARDEST!
We would like to ask you, our supporters and patrons, to advocate for your local library. Take a look at the statement from the Maine Library Association. Then, take action by visiting the Show up for Libraries webpage which lists the ways you can help advocate for your local library. Any loss of federal funding will directly impact you as this money goes towards the following:
Free 24/7 internet,
InterLibrary loan service,
E-books and e-audiobooks through CloudLibrary,
Books by Mail program for homebound individuals and Maine residents who live in rural areas,
And more ...
Federal funding for libraries accounts for just 0.003% of the overall federal budget, and this incredibly modest investment ensures that all communities have access to essential library services regardless of local funding capacity. Libraries are open to all, and services are well used. In 2023, there were over one million visits to public libraries in Maine.
Thank you for your support!
My Cloud Library
The Pembroke Library volunteers are happy to announce that patrons now have free access to electronic books in both print and audio format from the state-supported online service Cloud Library: www.mycloudlibrary.com.
Used Book Shop
Volunteers Lysa and Mona (and others) have spent many hours organizing the library's Used Book Shop on the second floor. It's now open during all normal library hours. And remember, it's handicap accessible.
Guidelines for Donating Used Books to the Library
Thank you to everyone who has donated used books to the library over the years. We recently were able to expand our Maine Collection by such a donation. The library continues to welcome these donations. We first determine if the book needs to be added to our collection and, if not, it is added to our Used Book Shop on the second floor.
Since the shop opened last year, we have noticed several book genres that do not sell and no one will even take them for free. These include: Encyclopedias, Readers Digest Condensed Books, Catalogs, Yearbooks, Town Meeting Notes, DVD's, Tapes, CD's, Videotapes, Pulp Fiction (bodice rippers, etc.), Travel Guides outside the US.
Our Maine Collection now greets patrons at the main door.
All large print books are easy to find with new signage.
